Artist Shane Anderson was invited by Rebuilding Together Chicago to lead a community mural project at the Sylvia Family Center, part of CCO (Cornerstone Community Outreach). The mural was sponsored by Republic Waste Services, who also provided the volunteers that made the project possible.

Over the course of the day, between 6–11 Republic volunteers worked alongside Shane at any given time. In addition to helping with the mural, they also contributed to improvement projects around the facility.

The mural itself was an ambitious undertaking — measuring 48 feet long and 8 feet high. Despite its size, the team completed it in under 10 hours. Designed to be welcoming, colorful, and inviting, the mural reflects the flowers that bloom outside the Sylvia Center and brings that natural beauty into the center’s communal event space.

Now complete, the mural transforms the space into a warm and inspiring environment for gatherings, activities, and celebrations — a true testament to the impact of collaboration between artists, nonprofits, and community partners.
